Hardness - White Scaling

Water hardness is commonly known as lime in water. It will leave scaling on sinks, bathtubs, toilets, showerheads, tea kettles, dishwashers, hot water tank elements and coffee pots. It can dull whites and fade colours in the laundry. The higher the hardness the more of an impact it can have on your home.

The principal natural sources of Hardness in water are sedimentary rocks, seepage and runoff from soils. In general, hard water originates in areas with limestone formations.
water hardness
Manitoulin Island is primarily limestone with shallow soil cover. Most drilled wells contain levels of hardness that exceed 15 grains with the common value being 25 grains. All drilled well sources are generally harder than surface water from lakes or streams.

Hard water requires more soap, shampoo or detergent than soft water, so your soap products require more to achieve the necessary cleaning. The minerals present in hard water inhibit soap's lathering and cleaning capabilities. The effects of hard water are felt most often in daily household activities such as laundry, showers, dishes and general cleaning. The excess spent on cleaners can dramatically increase the costs to keep your home clean.
